Normally the soffit is nailed to the single fascia board and covered with the aluminum fascia, this also covers the cut edge of the soffit. No dado on the secondary board and much less time consuming, weather tight and maintainance free.
Feb 06, 2009 · Yes, borat, I've heard of purlins. They go ACROSS rafters to support decking or roofing. Perhaps you were referring to under-purllins, which SUPPORT rafters? I was a farm kid and I could build a barn; mortised, tenoned and pinned with chinkapin oak in my sleep. I could pretty well figure out the placement of the under-purlins, jacks and knee logs. This will give us evenly spaced "thicker, decorative rafter tails" around the eaves of the house. The only thing we are doing differently from non decorative rafter tails is that we are replacing the standard 2 X 6 ends and adding a 6 X 8 decorative rafter tail, to achieve an even spacing around the house.
